St Andrews Day

St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and his day, 30th November is celebrated by Scots, around the world but who was he? He is thought to be the elder brother of St. Peter and was a deciple of Jesus himself. He travelled widely and is  also the patron Saint of Ukraine, Romania and Russia. Relics of Andrew are said to have been brought by divine guidance from Constantinople (modern Istanbul) to the place where the modern Scottish town of St Andrews stands today.

Flag of Scotland

The flag of Scotland is the blue Cross of St. Andrew, (Saltaire) and this is widely displayed as a symbol of national identity although it is not flown on Edinburgh Castle as this is still an official British Army Flag Flying Station. This causes a great deal of unrest with Scotish Nationalists who feel the Saltaire should be flown on St. Andrew's Day.
