Esala Perahere The Festival of the Tooth

This festival is celebrated in one small town in Sri Lanka. It symbolises the introduction of Buddhist to this small island nearly 2000 years ago. It lasts for 15 days and is in honour of the sacred relic of Buddha’s tooth and the four guardian gods Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and the Goddess Pattini.

The sacred tooth is paraded through the streets of the town of Kandy

The parade itself is known as the Perahera. A herd of 12 elephants all dressed in colourful costumes one of which carries the casket with the Buddha’s tooth on its head.
