70% of our planet are our oceans and we rely on them for so much. According to the UN “they are “the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe, [as well as] a major source of food and medicines and a critical part of the biosphere.” In the past few decades, the threats from pollution, overfishing and other forms of exploitation to marine habitats have increased dramatically.”
We have all seen the pictures of seas of plastic accumulating in our oceans. If we clog up our lungs then we won’t be able to breathe and if we can’t breathe we die.
Earth Summit
The Canadian Government first proposed the setting up of a World Ocean Day during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 but it was not officially recognised as the 8th June until December 2008. The Day is coordinated by The Ocean Project, a not-for-profit international community foundation.
The theme changes every year. For more information see https://worldoceanday.org
