World Genocide Commemoration Day is a UN global event to not only commemorate victims of genocide but to highlight our responsibility to prevent future genocides. In my opinion it should be World Genocide Prevention Day because it is still happening. 

Preventing Future Genocides

Officially, the event is called the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of This Crime. The agreement was signed in 1948 after the Holocaust (but first commemorated in 2015 which says a lot). How many other genocides have taken place since and are still happening.

According to the UN resolution defining the event's scope, it is an opportunity to memorialize and honour victims of past genocides and to stress “the responsibility of each individual and State to protect its populations from genocide. This entails the prevention of crime such as, inciting others to it and that fighting impunity for the crime of genocide is an important factor in its prevention.
Although the assemble signed the agreement on 9th December 1948.

What is Genocide:

Genocide is the intentional and systematic eradication of an ethnic, racial, or religious group.

The Holocaust which took place in Nazi Germany being 1943 and 1945 was one of the worst in recorded history and is generally thought to be around 6 million. But it wasn’t new. Before then in 1755-58 There was the Dzungar Genocide in the Qing Dynasty where 80% (600,000) of Zungharian Oirats killed. The the slaughter of the Aborigini and Native American populations. The Ottoman Empire killed 50% of the Armenians and 25% of the Greeks who lived in the area.  

Let alone the ones since the Cambodian Genocide 15–33% of total population of Cambodia killed[19][20]including:
99% of Cambodian Viets
50% of Cambodian Chinese and Cham
40% of Cambodian Lao and Thai
25% of Urban Khmer
16% of Rural Khmer

Although numbers have decreased since the war, The Ruandan genocide in 1994 with up to 1 million victims is one of the bloodiest more recent examples. And currently in the Sudan the Darfur genocide. In total approximately 25million people according to Wikipedia.

It beggars the question, exactly are the UN and world governments DOING about it?
