First introduced in 2018 June 22 has been designated Windrush Day in the UK to honour the British Carribean Community who at the end of the second world war came from all corners of the British Commonwealth to help Britain get back on her feet. We owe them a debt of gratitude because if they had not come, not only would our economy not have recovered in the post war years as much as it did but we would also not have been leading the world in how to create and live peaceably in a multiractial sociaty.

While the Windrush Generation and their descendants are today honoured for the immense contribution they made to British society and continue to make, the first Afro-Caribbean immigrants were met with extreme intolerance from large parts of the white population although they were welcomed by many as well.  

Introduced in 2018

Windrush Day was introduced in 2018, on the 70th anniversary of the landing of the first Caribbean migrants, for the purpose of “encouraging communities across the country to celebrate the contribution of the Windrush Generation and their descendants”, according to the UK government. Backed by government funding, the day features a large variety of activities, including dance performances, exhibitions, and debates.
