Today is Native American Heritage Day, (also known as American Indian Heritage Day) and recognises the native American heritage, history and contributions it has given to the world. It is always held on the Friday after Thanksgiving. American Indian Heritage Day also aims to honour the achievements and contributions made by Native Americans and their culture to the US and the rest of the world.
The Native American culture has contributed in may fields including agriculture, art, medicine, music, language and spirituality. Elementary and secondary schools are encouraged to educate students about the history, achievements, and contributions of Native Americans.
In some states such as Maryland it is a legal holiday
Many people take part and enjoy the ceremonies and activities taking place promoting the historical and present day status of the Native American tribal governments, their culture, traditions and languages.
