23rd June is International Widows' Day and was introduced by the United Nations in 2010 to address poverty and injustice faced by widows and their children in many countries around the world even now in this day and age.
The plight of widows world-wide has been its focus because women in many countries experience great hardship after their husbands die and are often shunned by their society, especially in India. I experienced this first hand when my husband died as many of my "so called friends" disappeared into the woodwork and no longer wished to know me.
