The aim is to promote non-violence through education and public awareness. 2nd October was chosen because it was Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. Gandhi lead india to freedom from the Britishin 1947. He taught people the philosophy of Ahimsa, which encourages the use of non-violence as a tool for the peaceful resolution of differences.
The principle of non-violence rejects the use of physical violence to achieve social or political change and advocate non violet persuasion, including marches and vigils, non-cooperation, non-violent intervention, such as blockades and occupations.
It is celebrated with:
- Multi-faith prayer meetings
- Light ceremonies promoting non-violence and peace
- Multi-media broadcasts
- Lectures and seminars about non-violence
- Street awareness campaigns.
