International Day for Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

“Nuclear weapons present an unacceptable danger to humanity. The only real way to eliminate the threat of nuclear weapons is to eliminate nuclear weapons."  UN Secretary-General António Guterres.  And how much does it cost us in cash and energy?

Achieving global nuclear disarmament is one of the oldest and primary goals of the United Nations. It was the subject of the General Assembly’s first resolution in 1946.

Yet, today nearly 14,000 nuclear weapons not only remain but their numbers are increasing as new nations expand their armaments and existing nations modernize their nuclear arsenals. While the number of deployed nuclear weapons has declined since the height of the Cold War, none apparently have been destroyed whatever the treaty said and there are currently no nuclear disarmament negotiations underway.

The So Called Status Quo

The so called status quo has been in effect for 75 years and the threat of total annihilation has kept world wars at bay but personally I would dearly love to see the end of all wars and global peace reign in my lifetime.

If nothing else the global cost of all these nuclear deterrents and, so call, defence policies, which according to the annual report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute was in 2019 US$1.917 trillion a 3.6% increase from 2018. How much better could that money be spent?
