Science of Energy Healing 08 - Reiki and Science

Over the last 20 years since I started teaching Reiki, there has been a lot of research into energy healing and science and Reiki in particular. Much of which has shown that Reiki practitioners, when channelling energy, do so at low frequencies. https://www.lelauvitel.com/news/how-reiki-treatment-works-according-to-science/

William Rand, founder of The Centre for Reiki Research Including Reiki in Hospitals and the Touchstone Process has been a pioneer in gathering documented research into the effect of Reiki. There have been many double-blind studies conducted at many hospitals around the world but mainly in the USA. Some research compares Reiki against other forms of healing, particularly Reconnective Healing and has found it more effective. For more information see https://www.centerforreikiresearch.org

There are currently studies taking place at many hospitals and universities around the world which include people receiving Reiki from a Reiki Practitioner, from what is known as “sham Reiki” i.e. someone who has not been attuned to Reiki sending healing energy, a control group who do not receive any healing at all. All studies seem to be coming up with the same result, that those receiving Reiki proper show less stress, less pain and heal faster than those receiving sham Reiki or are in the control group, thus evidencing that Reiki Is more than just a placebo. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5871310/

In 2019 a study was conducted in the USA into the effect of a single Reiki session on the physical and psychological health in a large nonclinical sample. The results suggested “that a single session of Reiki improves multiple variables related to physical and psychological health”. See here for full details of this study. https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/full/10.1089/acm.2019.0022

Current Distance Reiki Studies

At the time of writing (November 2020) I am participating in a Distance Reiki Healing scientific study taking place within the NHS working with NHS medical professionals who are seeking healing during the Covid 19 crisis.

For instance, the biological effects of Reiki on the ANS we measured in a study by Wardell and Engebretson and they found a significant reduction of anxiety and systolic blood pressure, and a significant increase in salivary immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels.

Three other studies have shown that Reiki reduces burnout syndrome (BS) in health-care professionals. Diaz-Rodriguez et al indicated that Reiki treatment produces a mild but significant relaxation response in nurses with BS symptoms.

Another study showed that a single session of Reiki brought immediate and measurable physiological stress relief to nurses as indicated by reduced blood pressure and enhanced secretion of the protective antibody IgA.

Rosada et al (6) showed that Reiki treatments given weekly for six weeks significantly reduced BS among mental health clinicians. Specifically, Reiki reduced emotional exhaustion and feelings of depersonalization.

Reiki research at St Georges in Tooting, look promising for Reiki research based on raw data collection at the Connecting Reiki with Medicine project where they focusing on areas of anxiety, sleep and pain. This comes under the umbrella of Full Circle Fund Therapies a charity working within the hospital.

The Connecting Reiki with Medicine website references resources for well-designed Reiki research studies, critical evaluations and systematic reviews which have been published in Clinical, Nursing or peer-reviewed journals.

In conclusion

There is a significant body of evidence which suggests Reiki’s positive effects for the relief of stress, anxiety, sleep deprivation, chronic and acute pain, especially among staff with burnout syndrome. By helping to promote relaxation and improve sleep, Reiki may help to boost the immune system.

This also applies to The Healy and Bioenergetic Frequencies which has been approved as a class 2 medical device in Europe for the treatment of pain, sleep disorders and mental health for such things as PTSD, depression and anxiety. In The US Healy is FDA approved for temporary relief of pain associated with sore and aching muscles in the shoulder, waist, back, arms and legs due to strain from exercise or normal household work activities and for the symptomatic relief and management of chronic, intractable pain and relief of pain associated with arthritis.

Although, as yet, it may not be proven beyond a doubt, I think there is enough scientific evidence and exploration, to show that Energy Healing in all its forms can and does make a difference and help us feel more energised and happier. I have never seen any evidence to say it is harmful in any way or that it has ever had any harmful effects. Whether you choose to explore Reiki and Higher Dimensional Healing or Bioenergetic Frequencies of The Healy or the Especially for You range of oils, essences and sprays, or any other complimentary therapy, it is certainly worth exploring.
