Festival of Matronalia

In ancient Roman tradition the 1st March is the Festival of Matronalia, (also called Matronales Feriae), which was the topsy-turvy feast sacred to Juno, the birth goddess, who was both wife and sister to Jupiter the chief of the Roman gods. Matronalia symbolzed not only the sacredness of marriage but also the peace that followed the early marriages been Sabine women and Romans.

Peace and prayers for marital fidelity

The festival was comprised of married women walking a processional way to the temple of Juno where they made offerings to celebrate peace and prayers for marital fidelity. At home, offerings were also made. Wives received gives from their husbands and the Mistress of the house gave a feast and waited on their female slaves and servants.
