History of Grue Demoiselle, venue for many of my retreats

An article by Catherine Jameson on the history of Grue Demoiselle and why we are offering £400 off the usual price for this special, Caring for the Carers Holiday.

In 2007 we were looking for a new adventure, the world was our oyster and we finally settled on France as my husband knew I loved France after working in Paris for a Swiss bank when I was in my 20's. I have since discovered that rural France is very different from life in a smart all-expenses paid apartment in central Paris. But what an adventure!

outside 2015We found our property when I walked in the front door and had visions of happy people sitting around a huge table laughing and enjoying themselves, it was perfect and as we walked around the dilapidated property which had been empty for 20 years we said "oh this room is ok, just needs a new floor and paint on the walls". We have no idea what we were thinking of, before we knew it we were living in a caravan in the garden and realising that although each room could be 'done', there were 14 of them as well as a collapsed barn and an opening date a year away and only the two of us to do the work! There are so many stories to tell of life renovating a French Farmhouse.  But look at it now:

Our original intention was to offer activity holidays such as painting, photography, furniture restoration etc and we had all our tutors lined up before we moved to France. However, before we had completed the purchase of our property every tutor had dropped out or disappeared for a whole raft of different reasons.

At the same time we had a visit from a family member who had just had their book published and it so happened their contact for the publishing house lived near us in France and was going to contact our family member whilst they were visiting us. I took the phone call and in chatting I mentioned our predicament with our tutors and the publisher said that she had loads of published tutors looking for a place to do their workshops... Voila! There was one curve ball and that was the publisher at this stage only published spiritual books and all the tutors were doing 'alternative' subjects like Palmistry, Angel Journeys, Psychic development, tea leaf reading, dowsing and so it went on! We realised that we were being guided and were able to then advertise under one umbrella of 'mind, body & spirit' and attended MBS shows in the UK to spread the word.

We ran courses for about 8 years but with the event of webinars, people stopped coming to residential courses and we decided to change direction and formula, offering more relaxed retreats (bring your slippers and get up when you want).

Over the years we have continued to improve and renovate and learn about so many different people, we think it's a life time vocation. Part of the year we let the main house out to large groups on a self catering basis and around that we also offer a few courses and retreats. The courses lately have been dog interest courses bringing tutors from the UK and this year we found a local Tai Chi tutor to offer a retreat.

All of our guests comment on the peace and tranquility, nestled as we are in the middle of a working farm, there is something special about the place which we cannot explain and can only be experienced.

We met the family who had farmed and lived in the house for the last 60 years and they explained how it had always been a happy house as long as they knew and we think this has imprinted itself into the stone walls.

To help us through the spring and winter a friend suggested I became a carer and have been caring now for the last four years. During this time I have met lots of different carers and realised how dedicated and how hard it is for a lot of us.

I think I am one of the lucky ones as I get to come home to my husband and my two dogs frequently, but I know a lot of the carers move from job to job and are often far away from home. This is why we decided we would like to offer a Special Discounted Holiday for Carers, because we think they deserve it.  A chance to have a break and a change of scenery. A chance to relax and be waited on for a change. We teemed up with one of our tutors, Joylina Goodings who now is caring for her own parents. Joylina has many qualities and has been one of our popular tutors since the beginning. She is also a qualified bereavement counsellor and the perfect person to give support and to bring something different to our lovely caring guests.
